Over the last couple of months there have been a few glimmers of hope for the property market in the United Kingdom.  While the industry is still obviously in a troubled position the decline has reportedly been slowing and last month certain areas were even reporting that up to 10% of properties were actually selling for over their asking price for the first time in recent months

June saw the first rise in housing prices this year as a survey conducted by Nationwide building society reported that there was a 0.9% increase in house prices throughout the country taking the average price of a home from £154,016 to £156,442.  While the stabilisation of the property market is seen as a welcome step key analysts were fast to note that there is still a very long way to go before any kind of permanent recovery will be able to take place

The Royal Institute of Charted Surveyors reported that June also seen a slip in the number of unsold properties on estate agents books.  Additionally Savills research announced that houses are at last beginning to fetch above their asking price.  They stated that in certain areas, including Oxford and Truro, there has been a huge increase in interest in property buying which has resulted in an increase of over 10% in London property purchases.  It is thought to be the increase in interest, caused by stabilising prices, combined with the lack of properties currently on sale in some areas that has caused this spike in value.  This is likely to be short lived however as some of the many reposed houses are soon to beginning going on the market and thus lowering competition.

Anatomy of the EU Economic Crisis

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The European Union (EU) economic crisis is regarded by many as the biggest challenge that the group has ever faced. Years ago, the euro, eu’s official currency, was hailed by many as the currency that will dethrone the dollar. However, as soon as the Greek economic tragedy came, currency speculators who used to rely on the euro, suddenly changed their minds and dumped their euro currency holdings. What exactly happened?

Let’s talk about what overvalued selling means in the context of the euro and the 2010 EU crisis.

Currencies exchange rates differ almost every day. They are quite freely dictated by market prices, i.e. Supply and demand. If the euros circulating in the world market lose demand, the euro loses value. There are many factors that affect this. However, in the context of the EU economic crisis, the main trigger is the burden that is Greece. Thus, everybody braced themselves for the plunge of the Euro as soon as news of the Greek debacle broke out.

Greece Debt Crisis

Lessons From Greece

Greece, one of the oldest countries on the planet, suffers from one of the oldest problems on the planet: debt. The Greek debt debacle is playing significant havoc on the world’s financial markets. As Carmen M. Reinhart, author of a book on 800 years of world debt crises said on The New York Times Economix blog recently, “Greece casts a long shadow on the European continent because 15 other countries share a common currency with it, the euro.”

What does the euro and Greece’s debt problems have to with the American economy? Far more than we would like, as was indicated by the meltdown in the world financial markets in the first week of May. The “Crash of 2:45″ is what the May 6 market plummet is being called and it was a vivid reminder that the finances of the world are intricately connected.

The week following the market meltdowns, the European Union and the International Monetary Fund are bailing out Greece to the tune of $1 trillion. According to the Associated Press, the huge rescue package was more generous than expected and spurred a rebound in the financial markets. But like America’s bank bailout two years, it has been met with as much skepticism as praise.

Economic Tsunami – Japan’s Crisis

Posted by: | Comments (0)

In the recent past, the world’s economy has seen crisis after severe crisis. Yet, investors and money managers are “bullish” and anticipate economic growth with only minor pull backs – a healthy sign for a bull market.

Already in 2011, we have witnessed riots and revolts in the Middle East and North Africa, a war-like situation in Libya and devastating earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan. Through it all, world markets have largely held steady.

So is all this too much of a strain for global markets, or can they absorb these shocks and continue higher?

I wish I had a crystal ball… but, alas, I don’t.

High  Oil Prices
Over the past 2 months, oil prices have risen 16% from $90 at the beginning of the New Year to about $105 now.

Some of the reason of this rise was completely natural – global economi activity has picked-up, demand for oil has increased, and prices have naturally moved up. But as we all know, political disruptions in the Middle East have driven prices even higher.

So what’s next for the U.S. stock market?

Probably some good things, but let’s face it, we were due for a correction.

euro

At the time of writing, the Euro has risen against the Dollar and is standing at 1.2355 but this rise is unlikely to last and will give traders an excellent low risk high reward shorting opportunity. Let’s look at the reasons for the rise, why the Euro should fall and how to get into the market.

The bearish fundamentals behind the Euro’s fall are well known with sluggish growth and many countries suffering from huge levels of debt with Greece being the country which has been in the news most but there are many others. The rally is on, so what’s behind it?

Markets move to the fundamentals long term but move to sentiment in the short term and the fact is there are just to many speculators short the Euro and to see this all you have to look at is the free CFTC Commodity Futures Trading Commission data which shows speculators, boosted their bets short against the Euro in the week ended June 8, to just below record levels.

Ok so there’s no doubt about it, over the last few years we have been in the depths of a phenomenon that rears it’s ugly head only rarely, but with devastating effect; the economic recession. Further examining these 35 cycles of expansion and contraction, it can be noted that there have been approximate 38 months of expansion that has been followed by nearly 17 months of contraction. It can be concluded therefore, that economic recessions in recent times have been fewer in number and comparatively much shorter than in the past.
